About the Motor Pool Evaluation Worksheet
Motor pools can reduce fleet size, cut costs, and improve vehicle utilization, but only when the right vehicles are in them. The challenge is knowing which vehicles those are.
Too often, fleet managers either assign vehicles to a motor pool based on gut feel, or they avoid the decision entirely because the analysis feels too complex to tackle with the data they have.
This free worksheet takes the guesswork out of it.
Using a simple scoring model, it evaluates each vehicle across two dimensions:
-
Utilization: how actively the vehicle is being used based on annual miles, engine hours, days used, and maintenance events
-
Criticality: how operationally important the vehicle is based on mission importance, backup availability, service impact, and specialization
Each vehicle is scored and placed into one of three categories:
-
Keep: high utilization and high criticality; this vehicle needs to stay assigned
-
Monitor: mixed results that warrant a closer look
-
Motor Pool Candidate: lower utilization and lower criticality; a strong candidate for shared use
No perfect data required. The worksheet is designed for fleet managers working with real-world data, rough estimates on engine hours and days used are fine.
