Maintenance Checklist for Your Ambulances

Maintenance Checklist for Your Ambulances

People rely on ambulances to get to them quickly when they suffer a medical emergency. Experiencing a vehicle breakdown when someone’s life is on the line is not an option — so it’s important for your emergency services fleet to undergo routine preventative maintenance to detect and repair minor issues before they become larger problems that could potentially lead to unexpected vehicle breakdowns.

During PM services, it’s important for your operation to perform the following tasks during each inspection:

  • Check the tires to look for signs of wear and tear and check the pressure and tread.
  • Inspect the door switches. If needed, apply lubricant.
  • Examine the lights and sirens to ensure they are working properly.
  • Check and clean the interior and back-up cameras.
  • Examine all electronics on board, including all screens.
  • Inspect all cables and fasteners.
  • Check the stretchers and backboards.
  • Inspect all fluid levels and refill as needed.
  • Examine the engine and its components.
  • Check the brakes, including the pads and rotors.
  • Inspect the suspension system and look for any worn components.
  • Check the heating and cooling systems.
  • Examine all of the windows and mirrors.
  • Ensure the wiper blades are working properly.
  • Check the battery.
  • Inspect the seatbelts and other safety devices.

The following tasks do not have to be performed as often, but should still be scheduled regularly:

  • Check the suction devices.
  • Clean and inspect the battery connections.
  • Examine the conversion batteries and apply lubricant if needed.
  • Check the oxygen systems and look for leaks.
  • Inspect the safety net webbing and anchors.
  • Check the door handles and door hinges and lubricate if needed.
  • Examine the electrical panel and its connections.
  • Inspect the emergency release latches for doors.
  • Clean and wax the interior surfaces.
  • Examine the quick-release oxygen cylinder bracket.

While this list can provide general guidance, your emergency services fleet can create a more specific list based on your vehicles and your needs.
