5 Must-Do Maintenance Tasks on Your Vehicle’s Air Conditioning System

As the temperatures start to rise, it’s important to make sure your fleet vehicles’ air conditioning systems are working. Keeping vehicle cabins cool provides both comfort and safety for fleet drivers, as the A/C system can help prevent them from overheating as the sun beats down on the vehicle.

To make sure your vehicles’ air conditioning systems are functioning fully before the summer heat hits, perform these five must-do preventative maintenance tasks.

Conduct an A/C Performance Test

A good place to start when servicing a vehicle’s air conditioning system is an A/C performance test. This will let technicians know how the unit is functioning and if there are specific issues that need to be resolved during the preventative maintenance check.

Clean the Condenser

Remove dirt and build-up from the condenser to allow for good air flow. While cleaning the area, also check from any broken or loose parts that need to be replaced or repaired.

Inspect the Filters

Technicians should check and clean the filters.  Clogged filters can result in blocked airflow. Air cabin filters should also be checked because dirt can inhibit the evaporator coil’s ability to absorb heat. Any filters that are in poor condition should be replaced during the inspection for optimal efficiency.

Check for Leaks

During PM, check the air conditioning system for any leaks. A/C systems need refrigerant to operate fully, so any leaks can reduce their effectiveness.

Test the Fans

Make sure when the A/C system is on, cold air is actually flowing into the vehicle. If the unit is on and the cold air isn’t blowing in, it could signal an issue with the relay, temperature sensor, control module, fan motor, bad wires, or other issues. Technicians should perform a full inspection to determine why the cooling fans aren’t working.
