Fleet Managers: How to Set Goals for 2021

Chances are that your 2020 goals did not account for a world-wide pandemic and the economic fallout associated with it. So, as you look ahead to 2021, what are some realistic goals you can set for yourself and your fleet operation to get back on track next year?

Use these tips to help create realistic and achievable goals for 2021.

Assess Where You Ended 2020

Before you start setting goals for 2021, find out where you ended 2020. Assess which goals you accomplished, and which got backtracked due to COVID-19. Also, determine what concerns need to be addressed next year to fix any problems, whether they are financial concerns, staffing issues, or others.

Determine What Needs Your Attention First

After you’ve assessed where you and your fleet operation ended the year, it’s important to decide what problems need to be addressed first in 2021. Did you suffer financial setbacks? Do you need to address any staffing vacancies COVID-19 caused? Is staff morale low? Is business slow? Are you behind in your own personal development? Determining the priorities will help you create your goals.

Align Your Goals with Your Company’s Goals

Before setting your own goals, it is important to know what the company’s goals are for 2021 so you can ensure yours are supporting the company’s initiatives. Knowing what the company needs to accomplish will help you determine how you and the fleet operation can help, and what the priorities should be.

Create SMART Goals

Any goal you create should be a SMART goal, meaning it’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. This helps make sure your goals are attainable and measurable so you can be held accountable for completing them. Some examples are:

  • I will hire 10 technicians by the end of the second quarter.
  • I will increase our revenue by 2% by the end of the third quarter.

Instead of creating vague goals that are hard to measure, SMART goals set specific tasks that need to be completed by a specific date.

Share Your Goals with Your Team

After you complete your individual goals, it’s important to share them with your team, as applicable. Sharing your goals with your staff will help make you more accountable for completing them, and it will help your team set their own goals. Your organization’s goals should cascade from the top down, so just like you align your goals to the company’s objectives, your staff will align its goals with yours. This will ensure the entire operation is working together towards similar goals in 2021.
