Alternative fuel regulations were designed to reduce petroleum consumption, but are they keeping pace with today's vehicle technology and the realities of public fleet management?
In this episode of The Fleet Success Show, host Marc Canton sits down with Bob Williams, Assistant Commissioner of Vehicle and Asset Management for the State of Tennessee, to discuss the challenges of managing approximately 10,000 state fleet assets while balancing regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
Bob explains how the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) impacts state fleets, why hybrid vehicles receive different compliance treatment than certain alternative fuel vehicles, and why state fleet leaders are advocating for change. They also explore the hidden costs of alternative fuel adoption, the importance of total cost of ownership, and how telematics can strengthen driver accountability, improve fuel management, and support better decision-making.
Beyond the regulations, Bob shares lessons from his 28-year fleet career, including how he uses operational data to build trust with agency leadership and advocate for practical improvements that help government fleets operate more efficiently.
