May 10-16 marks the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Police Week. However, for fleets with police vehicles, it’s important to keep these squad cars in good working condition all year long. One way to keep them on the roadways is to perform complete preventative maintenance on each vehicle regularly.

To ensure your police vehicles are in good condition, follow the suggestions on this PM checklist:

  • Perform oil changes at manufacturer recommended intervals
  • Check all fluid levels. Replenish as needed.
  • Check the exterior of the vehicle for damage
  • Check the interior of the vehicle for damage
  • Check for operational defects
  • Examine the headlights, taillights and blinkers
  • Check the light bar
  • Inspect the tires for wear and tear and pressure levels
  • Check the siren
  • Inspect the brakes, including the emergency brake and brake pads
  • Check the emergency flashers
  • Inspect the heating and air conditioning systems
  • Check the windshield wipers and fluid levels
  • Inspect seat belts and ensure they are working
  • Ensure the vehicle has a spare tire, jack, traffic cones, crime scene tape, flares and first aid kit
  • Examine grip straps in prisoner transport vehicles
  • Check the transport vehicle camera system in prisoner transport vehicles
  • Check the canine insert, or cage, for K9 units
